Summer projects and MSX

Last Updated on 12 August 2013 | Written by CodeAsm

Recently I recieved a pakage from Japan containing the following ic:

Yamaha V9958

This is ofcourse a Video chip belonging to the 80s MSX series. Awesome looking 64pin DIP.

I did another search on the internet and yes, I realy like to build a MSX from scratch or at least a MSX upgrade card to turn my MSX to a Msx2 or even a MSX2+.

A qoute from Wiki:

The Yamaha V9958 is a Video Display Processor (VDP) used in MSX 80s home computers. More specifically, the MSX 2+, MSX turbo R and the "TIM" upgrade to the TI-99/4A. The Yamaha V9958, also known as MSX-Video, is the successor of the Yamaha V9938. It was clearly conceived not to be a very major upgrade to its predecessor, which hampered its adoption. The main new features are three graphical YJK modes (with up to 19268 colors) and horizontal scrolling registers.

I now want to buy the following:

YM2413 (maybe more, to play with) DIP14
YM2149 aka AY-3-8920 (DIP64, so i want to use it in a socket)
Some RAM chips for Video, CPU

And of course make a PCB for this all.
I also know that I have difficulties keeping my projects simple, ill start writing a add-on Card for my existing MSX, try making some game.
And maybe start making an upgrade card in such a way that an home-brew MSX can also use it. Magic everywhere. Also I realy need to go understand Glue logic.

Hope I don't break stuff :D
and I rly have no idea, maybe I should do something with my N8vem aswell, to get "into" stuff.

Remember this? its my N8vem, it still running so now and then. I should make some more cards for it :P

Iiyama Pro Lite E485S FIX

It was a busy weekend, and I did not have lots of time for everytyhing I wanted to do.

But I was pretty pleased with the fact that I could find some time and all the tools needed to fix my Iiyama E485S LCD screen.

This was the problem, like more people I had this screen laying arround wich gave a Greenish screen when turn on and that isnt going away.

Only if you say to a Debug/Service menu to use "special" values it is maybe in the correct colors again. But once power lost, so is the green screen back.

Xbox iso creation

| Written by CodeAsm

When I tried backing up some OXM demo disks I found out that I got to iso parts.

this is done by the backup app I used on the xbox. So here is a bit of the official update info:

Dvd2xbox v0.7.5 = finally exact 1:1 backups
All this time messing with layout files, dumps and isos in order to get almost 1:1 backups has finally reach to its end. Today Dvd2xbox v0.7.5 was released including a very interesting feature:

What's new/fixed:
* beta: added iso ripper to dvd2xbox. Please note that the raw ripping highly depends on the reading capabilities of your DVD drive. Couldn't test it due to missing softmodded box. Any reports are appreciated (

With this new feature you can get an EXACT 1:1 dump from any original you insert on your Xbox. As usual dvd2xbox´s output can be saved to the xbox´s hd, or directly to a samba share on the pc. In the first case, Dvd2Xbox will output 2 files if the disc´s size is +4gb, so you´ll have to join them back in your pc using the usual "copy /b file1+file2 finalfile".

Done :D

Z80 projects

| Written by CodeAsm

Its was 1986 when my Dad bought his first Computer, the Z80 based MSX the Goldstar FC-200.
Ram 64KB Vram 16KB and a Yahama video chip. He kept it as original as possible. And I enjoyed playing games and programming in basic allot.
Now back in 2009 I decided to build a n8vem and this is also a z80 based computer. both reside on a single pcb and working nice and more.

Today I decided to show you what more I did and what I want to do,
I have tried building an Z80 emulator using some sources I found and making it to a n8vem emulator someday (Yeah, not an msx, running cp/m only)

Going to make a z80 tester based on this: because I found some cpu's lying around unknown if they work.

Anyway, here is a picture and sources are gonna be released soon to (Horrible code from me)

based on a z80 cpu, this is my first emulator and it works :P

Ive rewrite some debug output, so that will be included to the sources.
I really need to add some commenting system here.

Next image is from a Arcade game im writing a "driver" for. MAME.
Its slowing me down a bit because I cannot find lott of time to debug my pointers and new memory locations.

It seem this version is slighty different than the USA and normal EU version (its a IT version I think.) more on this soon when I get more time for Mame and much.
